IEHARA, Masanori and Kan’ichiro SHIOZU. Gakko Hitsuyo - Irozu Mondo. [2], 40, [2] on 22 double folded leaves. Illustrated with two hand-coloured charts and small hand-coloured squares throughout the text. 8vo., 210 x 150 mm, bound in publisher’s wrappers with printed label. Kyoto: Kyoto, Shiga Shinbun 1876.
One of the first text books on Western colour theory in Japan, likely derived the theories of the Englishman George Fields. The juxtaposition of the Western designs of the colour charts within the context of a nineteenth century Japanese printed book makes this a particularly appealing publication. Some faint damp staining, more pronounced on the cover, overall a very good copy.
