The Sphinx.  [44] pp.  Illustrated with type and ornamental specimens on each page.  4to., 265 x 240 mm, bound in publisher’s printed wrappers.  [New York: Continental Type Founders, ND (1925)].

First Edition.  An art-deco type specimen book published by the Continental Type Founders whose mission was to bring the best of European foundry type to the United States in the 1920s.  The present example displays the types from the French firm Deberny et Peignot, who were integral in developing the deco aesthetic in commercial printing

The founder of Continental Type Founders , Melbert Brinckerhoff Cary Jr. (1892-1941), collected 2300 books about printing.   After his death, the Cary Collection was presented to the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1969 by the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust as a memorial to Melbert Cary.

Publications by the Continental Type Founders seem to be widely held in American institutions, the present example less common.  Some minor smudging and spotting, spine with some wear, else fine.
